Believe me! One month back itself, I thought this announcement will come. After I saw the following slide, I confirmed myself....

I welcome this move from Microsoft of renaming the word from WinFX to .NET Framework 3.0. This really avoids the confusion that the developers had around WinFX. Even though the .NET Framework is the core part of the WinFX with new improved, first class classes, the word “WinFX” unnecessarily craft a pseudo assumption and make "WinFX" as a brand new technology. I believe the picture above clears most of the questions.
One more new name - Windows CardSpace (WCS) formerly known under the codename “InfoCard.”!!!! InfoCard is now CardSpace, and WinFX is now the .NET Framework 3.0.
The next generation of .NET Framework 3.0 contains
.NET Framework 3.0 - Managed-code programming model.
"Windows Presentation Foundation" is the name for Microsoft's unified presentation subsystem for Windows, formerly known as "Avalon".
"Windows Workflow Foundation" is the name for Microsoft's strategic programming model for building workflow enabled applications.
"Windows Communication Foundation" is the name for Microsoft’s unified programming model for building connected systems, formerly known as code-name "Indigo".
"Windows CardSpace" is the set of new Windows capabilities called Windows CardSpace (formerly "InfoCard"), which provides a standards-based solution for working with and managing diverse digital identities.
Along with above new functionalities, it also consists of the existing .NET Framework components including Base class libraries, ASP.NET, WinForms, ADO.NET and XML Web Services.
Check Soma’s mail on the official announcement that Win FX is now branded as .NET Framework 3.0. He also confirms that the .NET Framework 3.0 will still ship with Windows Vista, and will be available down-level for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 as planned.
